Peer Counseling

Peer Counseling is a service which matches a person with a disability who is seeking to come to grips with living life with a disability with a person who has a similar disability for purposes of sharing experiences, knowledge or skills.

People with disabilities often find themselves very much alone as they work to establish a more independent lifestyle. It is often very difficult to confide in even those they are very close to, including professionals, family and friends. In many situations a feeling of great frustration that "nobody understands what I am going through" results in feelings of depression and alienation. IMPACT service staff consists entirely of people with disabilities who know exactly what it's like to feel isolated, depressed and alienated. Very often peers with similar disabilities who "have been there" can help individuals seeking a more independent lifestyle come to grips with their disability and develop the necessary skills to cope with and manage life with a disability.

Services are typically provided at the IMPACT office. In situations where an individual cannot get to the office, home visits are possible. The services are provided to help support individuals who are seeking a more independent lifestyle.
